Disease index
Home Up WHO MSF GAVI Disease index

This page provides some basic data on the key diseases.  (I have excluded HIV at present as there is so much material on that topic.  It is not neglected, even if treatments are not available in the Developing World)

bullet

The Green boxes represent diseases with tried and proven Vaccinations which GAVI is focussed on making available in every country.

bullet

The red boxes are the ten top diseases being tackled by the WHO in its TDR program  Links to the TDR information on these diseases is available in the diagram below.   Below the table are two charts showing how TDr allocates its financial resources

bullet

a green box in the treatment column implies an acceptable treatment is available

Menu Diseases

bullet

The dark red boxes are those diseases identified in the MSF 'Neglected Diseases' campaign

bullet

At the end is Rotavirus, a common cause of diarrhoea and a leading killer which is not in any of these campaigns and poses a challenging ethical dilemma.  A vaccination exists but has been withdrawn because it can cause a complex side effect in 1:100,000 vaccinations.  In the West the disease and the side effect can be treated anyway. But the vaccination has been withdrawn in spite of the impact on the number of children who will die without it.An excellent article can be found in the GAVI newsletter for May 2000 in pdf format click here
